The LDS church is one of the few major religious organizations that keep it's members in the dark about its financials. Scientology is another one. When I give my tithes and offerings to the Church of Jesus Christ, I don't view them as donations such as I might give to the Red Cross or the United Way or other organization with which I have an arms-length relationship. Rather, I regard it as a no-strings-attached gift such as I would give to a beloved and respected friend, one who through past behavior over many years has earned my implicit trust, one I know from constant and longtime observation can be counted on to act in ways that I not only approve but applaud and champion. I don't need or desire an accounting from such a gift recipient. You or others might think me foolish or contemptible for giving with such an attitude, but, at the end of the day, it is not your affair anyway. Weekend before last I spent in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, covering the efforts of thousands of "Mormon Helping Hands" volunteers in flood relief efforts and the visit of two apostles and three other general Church leaders in giving aid, comfort and support to the flood victims I was dismayed to come home and see the poisoned, cynical, uncomprehending, nasty reaction of some of the Church's antagonists to these humanitarian efforts. It reminded me yet again (as though I needed it) that there are some who, if they can't destroy the Church itself, will do what they can to damage its reputation. They would, in your proverbial "New York minute," take financial information from the Church and twist and distort it, take it out of context, and do whatever they thought they could get away with to harm the Church. I do not trust them with sensitive information from the Church. Not for a moment. And if keeping the Church's financials away from public gaze amounts to thwarting them in their nefarious objectives, I am all for it. 1
