My Book Recommendation for You

I have gotten many good book recommendations from you all for understanding Mormonism. If you don't mind I would like to recommend an Evangelical book to Latter-day Saints. The book I recommend is How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth by Gordon D. Fee & Douglas Stewart. This is not a book about Mormonism. It is a book about reading Scripture. I do not agree with every point in the book, but it helped me so much to better understand Scripture. If you're not really interested in buying an Evangelical book, then let me encourage you to at least read the "Introduction" to this book. Westminster Theological Seminary has a PDF of the prefaces and Introduction HERE.

I always love interfaith dialogue that revolves around learning from each other rather than trying to prove each other wrong.  It's a breath of fresh air and your attitude is much appreciated.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Prof Fee has a long and enviable reputation, and I first encountered his name in the 1970s.  I note that he twice mentions Mormon baptism for the dead (pages 24 and 34) as an example foolish cultic heresy created by bending a biblical text (bad hermeutics and bad exegesis).  Otherwise he provides a lot of good, common sense.  Indeed, almost any book on biblical interpretation from Zondervan, Westminster John Knox, or InterVarsity Press is worth reading, and I have a whole collection of such volumes in my personal library.

Steve, Mormons are very open to reading "outside" books. If something is at an academic level (not a ministry type thing) we are all over it. Peter Enns' The Bible Told Me So was quite popular. (I'm familiar with Fee through my NT studies.)

I have not read it in a long time. I just remember how much I benefited from reading it as a young Christian. I'm not even sure if I have a copy still. If I do, then I will check out these pages.
