mfbukowski Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 They do not die for metaphors, they die for the big reality behind the metaphor. Living the gospel for the metaphor of the atonement while believing the atonement is a lie is like a patriot dying for the Stars and Stripes when there is no United States. No, it's not like that at all. Patriots die for the BELIEF in something greater- that indeed the United States IS better than other countries due to it's beliefs. They are dying for freedom and the American way of life, all of which are ways of seeing the world, not "big realities" - whatever that means. It's interesting that on another thread the United States was labeled a "useful fiction" because it was not a physical solid object. One man's fiction is another man's reality I guess. That's why these terms are not very useful really. The atonement is blatantly not a scientific fact provable by experimentation, it is a belief. Even if you had a video of the crucifixion AND an ekg of Jesus heart returning to life, it would not prove that your personal sins were forgiven by that death and resurrection. Maybe "metaphor" is not the best word, but it sure ain't a scientific fact. Beliefs are what motivate- facts are dead. No one is going to die for the boiling point of water. 1
mfbukowski Posted September 11, 2015 Posted September 11, 2015 From what I heard on a podcast today, the reason for hiding the truth of the seerstone translation was to steer clear of anything to do with money digging or the occult. This is probably never a good idea to avoid the true history. Another podcast with Richard Bushman has him saying the same thing, there will usually be something written down somewhere, that brings these matters up from the past.We are totally paranoid about not being mainstream "Christians" and being "weird" When the world is upside down, "weird" becomes the truth.
