When Is North Not North? A Norse Perspective.

It has been proposed that the heavenly directions NSEW as employed in the BoM should not be understood from our perspective, as being precisely North, South, East and West according to a compass, but rather the whole should be tilted 45 degrees or so, which would make the Mesoamerican Model of Sorenson, et al., more workable according to the text.

 

The proposal has taken hits, but it's not like such an idea comes from nowhere.

 

The Norse "North" was actually our Northwest, &cetera according to Lauritz Weibull here:

Is it your comprehension the latter should be judged by the former thus we're all to believe the Nephite Nation consisted of idiots who didn't know true north because you comprehension of the narrow neck of land is the one in Central America running east-west?

What do you consider to be "true north"? Do you consider a magnetic compass to point north (it doesn't point toward the north pole). The Earth is not a sphere, and does not spin perfectly about a polar axis (it wobbles relative to the sun).

How do you even define "true north"? How many degrees can you be rotated from your definition and still consider yourself to be facing north?

The cardinal directions of north, south, east and west are not named in the Bible. Each direction is given as a name of a place, or as in the case of the east, an event. The directions of N,S,E,W are names added after translation into Latin, German, English etc.

 

The Hebrew Bible mentioned  the four cardinal directions. The names of the directions seem to be associated with physical landmarks for the ancient Israelites living in the region of Judea.

The names of the 4 directions are different in the Bible :

 

• East - is named Kedem as mentioned in Exodus 27:13-

" וְרֹחַב הֶחָצֵר, לִפְאַת קֵדְמָה מִזְרָחָה--חֲמִשִּׁים אַמָּה."

"  And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits".

Kedem(meaning red and in Hebrew Edom ) refers to the color of the rising dawn, or the red sandstone cliffs of the Land of Edom to the east.

• South – is called Negev , Genesis 24:62-

" וְיִצְחָק בָּא מִבּוֹא, בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי; וְהוּא יוֹשֵׁב, בְּאֶרֶץ הַנֶּגֶב."

" And Isaac came from the way of Beer-lahai-roi; for he dwelt in the land of the South."

• North - is Saphon, derived from Mount Zaphon on the northern edge of Syria.

• West – is called Yam , meaning sea as mentioned in Numbers 34:6-

" וּגְבוּל יָם, וְהָיָה לָכֶם הַיָּם הַגָּדוֹל וּגְבוּל; זֶה-יִהְיֶה לָכֶם, גְּבוּל יָם."

" And for the western border, ye shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your west border."

 

Those names would not have been named in the BofM, simply because the places didn't exist.

The "True North Strong and Free" runs for about 3400 miles East to West across 89 degrees of longitude. As my aunt Mary said, North is relative.

I suggest adding the suffix " ish " to directions found in the scriptures.

By the way, the narrow neck in MesoAmerica does run east/west but the narrowness itself would be measured north/south.
