Prophet Scouts

I've never heard of the guy or his work before this moment, but as I generally trust your opinion, I will assume that he's not worth checking further into.  That being said, I rather liked the painting of all the modern prophets posing around the stairs in the Temple (SLC Temple, I assume), that appeared above.  That one seemed fairly innocuous and interesting.

Yeah, that's my art snob side coming out more than anything. I also don't like the temple/modern prophets montage for what Cal mentioned and the fact that it's just a little too kitch and iconographic for my tastes. Though his explanation is ridiculous (each log on the non-roasting fire being a symbol). The material itself isn't all that offensive...his execution is though ;). No seriously, the figures are all about the same with different heads and clothes. Plus the background folk are disproportionate. It gives this feeling that the heads are interchangeable....like paper dolls or something. The background does not recede, giving this painting a flat, muddy look to the painting. There isn't really anything that's really all that stylized about this painting that would make it stand out or exemplify creativity.

And I'm just as critical with a lot of well known mormon art. Often I'll say (to some of them) that they have good craft...at best. On my less charitable days I'll call some pieces beanie-baby art. They've learned to wield a paintbrush very well////....well....most of them at least.... one that I won't name has quietly moved to computer generated images without any of their usual clientele really noticing since "art" to many of them was just a pretty pic. It would drive me nuts to have them stand there and state what a beautiful painting these images were. I have no prob with graphic art. I just hate that he's made some half-baked graphic images and sold them for paintings (though he is getting a bit better with making them look more painterly). My problem is there's little substance beyond the immediate image.

For the record, there is really good LDS art as well.

With luv,

BD
