We are forcing ourselves to remember always what He did on our behalf. Jesus emphasized that if we would be His disciples, we must bear our own crosses. By picturing our blessed Lord on His Cross, we may often gain the strength to bear our own crosses with more courage. I know you know this boulder. I am preaching to anybody who would think to make an analogy with any other instrument of capital punishment. Yes, I am fully aware of the ignorance of the comment, but I have heard it dragged out before and it really bothers me.
David T Posted October 25, 2013 Posted October 25, 2013 I see no reason why the crucifix - or even the empty cross - can't be seen by LDS as a powerful icon recalling the events we regularly re-enact with the Sacrament and the culmination of the Endowment. While some members might view it as simply being redundant of the garments they are already wearing in terms of a physical token or reminder of the experiences, I think there is useful and good symbolism in its being worn in addition, if one so chooses.One's mileage, however, may vary. 1
Mike Reed Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 (edited) It has never made a lot of sense to me when some LDS emphasize the suffering in the Garden (as in the bleeding from every pore) as a crucial element of the Atonement but then go to the point of disparaging the suffering on the cross through attempting to diminish the significance of the cross/crucifix itself.Fwiw... When my hard back edition comes out, I plan to include a new chapter exploring this (seemingly culturally developed) theology.
