SeattleGrunge Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 http://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/2-ne/18.19?lang=engWhat is a peeping wizard? The chapter headings says, "Seek the Lord, not peeping wizards." I came across this verse in my personal reading this morning and it made me think about how Joseph translated the BOM w/ a peep stone and used it for a few other things. Is there any similarity in the understanding of what a peeping wizard is to what JS did with his stone? If so, do we have anything that shows what he thought of that verse?
thesometimesaint Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 One who relies on necromancy to communicate with the dead.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necromancy
SeattleGrunge Posted December 5, 2012 Author Posted December 5, 2012 Thanks. Doing some research shows lots of places referring to that "peep"-ing as making noises. Would JS and others in his day refer to using the seer stone as peeping as well? If so, then there would have been two religious definitions for that word.
thesometimesaint Posted December 5, 2012 Posted December 5, 2012 I think there has been a conflation of meanings over the years. From the scientific sense of the word there is no such thing as peep stones and/or necromancy. Dead is dead. Talking to them or communicating in any sense is dealing in the supernatural. So beyond what we normally term as science. It is in the religious sense that gives peep stones and necromancy any relevancy. LDS theology allows for peep stones, divining rods, Holy Garments, oaths, and affirmations at the instigation and support from God under controlled circumstances. What we don't allow for is necromancy in the literal sense of the word. So while it is possible to communicate with God or his servants the angels, and on limited occasions our dead. We seek after God, but not our dead.
Brant Gardner Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 You are two English words that ended up homophonous even though they came from different roots (Google "etymology peep"). You have peep to make a chirp and peep to quickly glance. The KJV is using the sound, and the peep stones used the visual meaning. 1
