CV75 Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 RE: the "coming of Elijah," I don't see why it couldn't be considered in stages or contexts just as the First Vision (or any other appearance since) could be considered part of or a form of the "Second Coming of Christ ."
MormonMason Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 I am looking at full color photos that I have on DVD of the relevant pages of the "Sketch Book for the use of Joseph Smith, Jr." under the date of April 3, 1836, and it does contain the Elijah episode. The wording is almost identical to what is now section 110 with the exception of an extra "the" and it being written in the third person when describing events happening to Joseph and Oliver.I am not surprised that the account would not be in the first person since no one else was behind the veils once they were dropped. The account would have to have been written soon after the event happened. Since Warren Cowdery was functioning as scribe at that time he would have recorded it. Joseph Smith did not do much writing in his own journals after 1832, and even then had a scribe write most of it. This writing in the third person seems to be Warren Cowdery's style because the previous entry in his hand also has the same third person style referring to things Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery did.I don't think I would make much of this. In any case, I cannot imagine Joseph Smith was unaware of the contents of this book.Well, I've stayed up far too long. I've got to head to bed soon...
