There have been mass extinctions throughout history. The explanation is only worth considering if you assume that there is a God.

Since God is in control, why would he allow this to happen? If there is no god, it appears even more hopeless. You achieve sentience, and then get snuffed out at age 3 before you have a chance to even learn to feed yourself.
