nettie Posted December 16, 2011 Author Posted December 16, 2011 Hey Duncan! You sound like the missionaries LOL! When you say that the prophet has said important things, what kinds of things? The whole concept of a prophet is really, really interesting to me. My roommate said that the prophet says stuff about families and about staying away from things that could harm people. I just wonder exactly what, because so far my roommate and the elders have not been too clear about what a prophet says.Help!nettie

To me, a prophet "points our souls to Christ" to borrow a phrase from the Book of Mormon, if we choose to follow. We don't blindly follow our eladers, we are counseled to pray about what they do say. One thing specifically that Pres. Monson has said that has helped me is he announced a Temple for my city in the Western Canadian Province that lies east of Sask. and west on Ontario... because of that I have been learning about a Temple so I don't take it for granted and I hope? I have learned more about the Saviour then I possibly would haveThis is from Lds.org about some what Prophets tell us and more about them!http://lds.org/study/prophets-speak-today?lang=eng Edited December 16, 2011 by Duncan
Nominee Posted December 16, 2011 Posted December 16, 2011 (edited) I know you have already been advised to do this several times but at the risk of sounding like a broken record I say again that you can read their words for yourself at http://www.lds.orgRead as much as you like. The words of God's prophets are available to you ~as they are for the whole world. The family thing is easy! That would be here.We are all missionaries, Nettie. There is nothing I love more than sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. You are a sister to me. I pray you find your way. Edited December 16, 2011 by Nominee
oats Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 That prophets seem like magical superheroes is a myth that probably comes from constantly hearing a few select surreal stories from the scriptures that cover thousands of years of history You can find out a more accurate description of a prophet's role here.
thesometimesaint Posted December 17, 2011 Posted December 17, 2011 Nettie:The Prophets' role is to testify of Christ, to be a Special Witness of our Lord and Savior. He is to lead the Church as the earthly representative of God.

Right now I'm getting ready to go home for the holidays, but I'll have a lot of time to read the stuff you pointed me to and to really look at the church.TTYL!nettie

darkandlight Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Hello everybody!I am new here, so I should probably introduce myself. My name is Nettie (yes - that is my real name, it is not too common in most parts, but it is an old family name) and I hail from a small northern town. Right now I am in university, and my dorm mate is a Mormon. She told me early in the semester, and recently she has been asking me to come to church with her. I've gone to church the past couple of Sundays (except today - I have to study for an exam that i have tomorrow). And I have also gone to a few recreational events, like fun fair back in October, and a Christmas party just last Friday, and also a couple of get togethers with some of the other students who are mormon.Anyways, I am not sure what to do, because before meeting my friend, I never had any contact with the Mormon church or with any Mormons, at least not that I know of. Now, my friend has asked if I want to talk to some missionaries and maybe see if I would like to join the church. She just asked me this last week, and to be honest, I hadn't even thought about it before she asked me.So, I've been googling around about mormons and the mormon church, and I have to be honest and say I have lots of more questions than I did before. I also found this chat board by following a link from somewhere else and I see that there is lots of activity. So maybe I can get some of my questions answered?I don't know if I want to join the church, but I have had some fun experiences with the people I've met so far. I am also a bit nervous to meet with a missionary. I always thought a missionary was someone who did charity work in Africa so I don't even know what to expect.Anyways, hi! I hope I can get enough posts in to start asking some questions!See you around!Nettie Hi there Nettie! I'm also new here. So welcome to us both.
