Recently in conversation with a Baptist Minister we were discussing the Council of Nicea and I mentioned to him that Athanasious [From my past limited reading of him] was that his personality was unchristlike to others who disagreed with him. Such reactions by him were having individuals flogged [whipped] beaten, families banished and taken away [which he himself was banished for a time]. possesions confiscated and other behaviours not in accordance with Jesus Christs teachings. This minister stated that I needed to repent for the statements abouit Athanasious that I made because he was a very godly man and did no such things.

Are there any true histories about Athanasious charactor that can be verified ?, Thank you in advance.

Athanasius was obviously not a perfect person by any means, but you really need to take anything you read about him (or any early church figure) with a grain of salt.

Most early church figures were vilified by their opponents, so it is hard to say with any certainty whether things said about any of them are accurate.

The comment that you need to repent for suggesting Athanasius wasn't a terribly nice guy is idiotic though

Well I did tell him that from my understanding Athanasious did have individuals flogged/beaten/banished/families taken away but this is from my past small reading of Athanasious.

His reply that you need to repent is silly though. Some people just hold the church fathers in too high of esteem.

Actually, Brigham Young was very concerned that the LDS people do this with their own Church leaders, as well. Therefore, he encouraged us to not simply accept everything they say, but to ponder things, reason them out, and pray about them. Though our leaders have the power and authority from God to guide and direct the Church, it is the Holy Ghost who reveals Truth to us. Thus it is the Holy Ghost who can confirm that the direction we are receiving from our Leaders is actually of God. I believe this is also a method used by Father to help us interpret correctly what our Leaders DO say. As you can see from almost every thread, we hold to different interpretations of what our Leaders have said. I think the same principle applies here in that when we are prepared, the Holy Ghost will reveal Truth to us. Since we are all at different points in our journey, we are subject to various levels of understanding of what is being taught not only through canonized scripture, but also what is being taught currently.

There is good papyrical evidence showing that Athanasius did imprison and beat Melitians.

In 300, Athanasius withdrew from Alexandria, evidently to avoid assisting some Melitians with their tax obligations. 110 He returned to the city and then set out again on a journey through Mareeotis, where one of his colleagues assualted a priest named Ischyras on the grounds that he was a heretic, smashing a chalice and overturning an alter. 111 This incident would prove his undoing, though it would take several years before Constantine would finally lose patience with the bishop. At the heart of it all ws the fact that Athanasius refused to compromise with his rivals, and this Constantine took very seriously indeed, even after those rivals disgraced themselves on more than on occasion by bringing patently false charges against him: in 334 Athanasius proved, before the council that had assembled to try him, that a man he was accused of having murdered was alive. 112 In 335 the emporer had finally had enough, and, after Athanasius was condemned by a church council, Constantine exiled him to Gaul. Although many of the charges against Athanasius may have been questionable, there can be no question but that he did violence to enemies in Egypt, or that he emploiyed gangs of thugs to do so. A letter, preserved on papyrus, details the assualt upon a parry that included the Melitian bishop of Alexandria. 113

So lets get this straight. Athanasius was the one who won the debate at Nicea and then he used violence and thugs against them? What's wrong with this picture?

Organaized 'an ecclesiastical mafia' and 'like a modern gangster, he evoked widespread mistrust, proclaimed total innocence - and usually succeeded in evading conviction on specific charges.

WoW! Wasn't Catherine Aurelia once named Athanasius? That discribes her and her carmite buddies to a T!

Looks like Constantine had his own Jeffress problem to deal with.

I think we could take any antimormon site that disses Joseph Smith and plug in Athanasias name in it's place and get an identical scewed picture painted of Christianity.
