Can someone help me with the easiest most cost effective way to transfer our old 8mm tapes to digital format? Our old camera broke so we can't watch our videos anymore so it's motivating me to get the transfer done.

Big UP!

Hello Lamanite...

Unless you have a friend who has equipment, you'll just have to bite the bullet and go with a company that does transfers... there's a couple of ways... a camera store, or a private individual/company. I just finished transferring quite a few tapes with a local company. To keep the cost low, I just did a staight transfer of all info from the 8MM to a DVD, i.e., not editing the 8MM. They could get 3 or 4 8MM onto one DVD... I think I did six the first time for $100 (the rate is usually about $30/hr.) It helps if you make up your label info so all they have to do is make the DVD label. My 8MM had music and sound which transferred also, so my end product is great. Now I can enjoy the 8MM I haven't been able to see for several years because my camera broke.

You won't be sorry...

I've done it a few times using iMovie, through my iMac's Firewire port. If your computer has a video input it's a fairly simple process, but you will need a functioning player. So if yours is broken, the best option is probably to take the tapes in to a place that does the transfers.

I'm pretty sure Ritz Camera does it, and I think I've even received an offer from Walgreen's for the service.

Good luck.
