Thou Shalt Be Overweight: Religious Involvement Correlated to Obesity

The more correct terminology is that factors correlated with religious activity are associated with an increased incidence of obesity.

I think we would all agree on this, but recognize that it is a finding from a single (albeit well done) study with all the caveats that this implies. Do you know what the p-value and confidence intervals were and what variables were corrected for?

The easiest imperfect example of the flaw in Foxtrot's conclusion is that advanced age is associated with religious activity but it does not lead to increased incidence of obesity, rather it is associated with an increased incidence of obesity (I think, but I may be wrong here in that there might be some causal component as well).

They concluded, and rightly so, that factors associated with religious activity lead to increased incidence of obesity.

Some segments of society do, I suppose.

Personally, I have never smoked or done drugs, and I could count the number of alcoholic beverages I've consumed on one hand. I feel no particular need for such activities. If the main value of religion is as a substitute for such things, then perhaps that explains why I feel no particular need for religion, either. :P

Actually many many segments of society, sports, movies, the glamor people. The ones who influence fashion. Models take on the heroin look to get jobs. So many segments of society, not "some" in the diminutive term.

I applaud that you do not do drugs or smoke. I know many who do not smoke and drink who are not LDS. The main value of religion is direction, not substitution.

I think the problem for LDS is time. I notice two of my Mormon neighbours have overgrown gardens, they just mow the lawns. Saturdays are out as they are often doing something for others, like helping someone move.A lady who lives two houses from me gets her husband to give her a life to the train station, I walk and it's not all that far. They sometimes see me going in the same direction but never give a life (exMormon I am :P ). The lady is quite overweight. Sunday afternoon seems to be meetings in the home with missionaries and Southsea Islanders arriving frequently

See this is what always amazes me about this lie called the Obesity Epidemic, since when is 33.8% a majority?

When I think epidemic people I think at least 50.1%, yeah people are becoming more heavy set based on the BMI, but who cares the BMI was made by insurance brokers not Medical Doctors.

In the worst state in the nation for obesity Mississippi, the obese are still outnumbered 2 to 1 by non obese!

If you were walking down the street and 1/3 of everyone you saw was obese, wouildn't it seem like they were in the majority, if only by weight?

If there are three persons, with two weighing 150 pounds, and one weighing 301 pounds, then obviously the one weighing 301 pounds is in the majority, right?
