cinepro Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 It is an oft-observed irony (and moral inconsistency) that Marriott Hotels, a hotel chain founded by and named for faithful LDS member J. Willard Marriot, makes pornography available for purchase in almost every one of their hotel rooms. As this has been oft-observed by critics, there have been a number of explanations offered as to why this might be.For example, it has been noted that the Marriott is a publicly owned company with responsibilities to its shareholders, and is no longer controlled by the LDS Marriott family. Issues of "agency" can also be cited. I was very glad to hear that we can put this issue (and these justifications) behind us, as the Marriott company has finally announced that they will no longer be offering pornography at their new hotels.Marriott takes porn off the menu at new hotelsHopefully this will start a trend that spreads to existing Marriott hotels and other hotel chains.I suspect much of the decision was influenced by travelers' abilities to access pornography with their laptop computers and other media devices. So there will surely be plenty of pornography viewing in the future at Marriott hotels. It just won't be sponsored by the Marriott company.
SilverKnight Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Well, there's still booze in the lobby bar.

Magyar Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Marriott annoyed the pudding out of me when they charged $12 for overnight guest parking at their hotel near the D.C. temple. Won't be staying there again.

I can tell you exactly how the critics will approach this. "Romney steps down from board, after Marriott decides to remove porn."How ya'll doing? Just stopped by to say Hi.

Analytics Posted January 21, 2011 Posted January 21, 2011 Here is Marriott's official statement:"It is our practice to keep adult content out of the reach of children and unavailable to any adult who chooses not to view it. We have strong controls in place that allow guests to block these materials. Changing technology and how guests access entertainment has reduced the revenue hotels and their owners derive from in-room movies, including adult content. We are working with in-room entertainment providers and technology vendors to transition to the next generation of in-room entertainment. This new platform of Internet-based video-on-demand will facilitate our exit from the traditional hotel video systems that included adult content in the menu selection, and will also provide guests greater choice and control over what they watch across our system. As we transition to this new platform, adult content will be off the menu for virtually all of our newly built hotels. Over the next few years, this will be the policy across our system."(emphasis added)Three comments:1- As I've always argued, Marriott Inc. does in fact have the authority do to this, even though they typically don't own the hotels, but only manage this.2- As I've always argued, Marriott Inc. does in fact make money off of this, not just the hotel owners.3- The reason they are making this move isn't because they are taking a moral stand, but rather because it isn't making much money anymore. What questions are left? Whether or not Chairman/CEO/largest-stock-holder had the power within his company to make this decision?
