Were Seymour Hersh and Martha Beck Separated at Birth?

So I'm reading The Corner and stumble upon a Jonah Goldberg post where he reports on a blog post at Foreign Policy.com, which in turn reports on a speech by journalist Seymour Hersh in Qatar. Now I've never cared for Hersh, but he has had his successes, so I thought I'd read the actual post to see what Hersh said this time. Goldberg's characterization of the post was spot on. The speech, at least according to the FP blog post, was a rambling mess of weird conspiracy theories of the sort Dan Brown would write about. But what was even more fascinating were the comments on the post. They were buying it. They were buying that top military brass pass around secret coins denoting their membership in a secret religious society on a religious crusade to turn mosques into cathedrals, that they or their co-conspirators had overthrown the U.S. government, etc.

Reading the comments, I couldn't help think back to the Martha Beck days where her equally ridiculous story was accepted as true by the likes of Beastie and Rollo Tomasi and with the same smugness demonstrated by the commenters at Foreign Policy.

And they call Mormons credulous.

On the other hand, the older I get, the stranger the world seems to get and more surprising every day.

If you had told me as a kid that by 2011 we would be having major trade relations with a capitalist China and that the predominant language spoken in Los Angeles would be Spanish, and that the world would be concerned with Islamic terrorists, and that I would be a Mormon- I probably would have died of shock on the spot.

And where are those flying cars anyway?

Well... IIRC I was supposed to get the Private Jet when the Maxwell Institute of Religious Studies imploded...
