Incidentally, I don't believe the text to really come from the Magi. Nor do I think it was ever as completely "lost" as the HarperCollins marketing people have portrayed it. But it may well be quite early -- late second to early third century -- and it offers an interesting window into a strain of early Christianity.

While I am skeptical of most of the accounts of the magi, as a man of letters I'll pursue Landau's work as I have time.

Ultimately, I'm still trying to wrap my mind around Margaret Barker's proposal that the wise men came from Qumran or Arabia as part of the larger priestly tradition that rejected Josiah's reforms. In that strain, I am cautious. Our Gospel Doctrine lesson covering the story of the Magi in Matthew 2 went well today...even after I potentially derailed the discussion by bringing up the pseudepigraphal tradition of the gifts being related to the three angels appearing to Adam and Eve.

Ah, yes, I ran across Revelation of the Magi last month at the public library. As I recall, Landau agrees with you that it is not a firsthand account, and he also thinks the bit about the Apostle visiting the land of Shir was probably added later to make the church authorities more comfortable with the account. There are certainly things in this text that will interest Latter-day Saints, and maybe a few that won't appeal so much. Fascinating stuff. :P
