Popular Post Smiley McGee Posted August 21, 2023 Popular Post Posted August 21, 2023 (edited) The more I observe human behavior, particularly that behavior exhibited in groups, the more I’m convinced that it is our wants and desires that run the show, while our beliefs, even our deeply held religious ones, are merely along for the ride, to justify getting what we want, or to be used as the group’s fiat currency. Statements of belief in the group build our credit, when certain beliefs go out of fashion, we take them out of circulation and manufacture new ones. There’s an interesting phenomenon in certain Christian circles, where certain of Jesus’ teachings are considered “woke” and no longer useful (article): "Multiple pastors tell me, essentially, the same story about quoting the Sermon on the Mount, parenthetically, in their preaching—'turn the other cheek'—[and] to have someone come up after to say, 'Where did you get those liberal talking points?'" Moore said. When the pastor would say, 'I'm literally quoting Jesus Christ' ... The response would be, 'Yes, but that doesn't work anymore. That's weak," he added.” I imagine with some introspection we’d never see this attitude cropping up in LDS wards…. An interesting story out of Texas where a prison worker, seven months pregnant, was experiencing labor pains at work and requested to leave. She was denied permission to leave for two and half hours and finally went to the hospital. The baby was delivered stillborn. The woman is suing the state of Texas and in response the state, “which has staked its reputation on “defending the unborn” all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court, are arguing the agency shouldn’t be held responsible for the stillbirth because staff didn’t break the law. Plus, they said, it’s not clear that Issa’s fetus had rights as a person.” (Article). Nice work pro-life Texas! Hypocrisy is pretending that we don’t tend to limit our beliefs to those ideas that benefit us at a given time. Edited August 21, 2023 by Smiley McGee 5

Hypocrisy is pretending that we tend to limit our beliefs to those ideas that benefit us at a given time. What group do you belong to, and what are your wants and desires concerning these two matters (Jesus' teachings and the legal negotiation between federal and state statue)?
