One of the problems with writing accurate history is ignoring fact, and substituting fancy. We need hard evidence, which seems inconvenient to many apriorists. Ok. You each might want to take a look in your crime-fighters textbook for clues. One method is to obtain actual, published data or other documents, and to cite them with precision. By gosh, and by golly doesn't really get to the heart of the matter. Look for people who were on the inside and who subsequently had a falling out: What did they say later, both in public and in private? What does the forensic evidence say? The comparative method can be applied with great care, statements and facts lined up opposite one another with calendar sequence (if possible). Patterns may then begin to reveal themselves. All the while, one must avoid making hasty, apriori generalizations, or applying logical fallacies. Solving crimes, like doing an archeological excavation or even solving puzzles of any kind, entails the same skills which inform good historical studies. In other words, critical thinking skills become particularly important in good history writing (historiography), as does acceptance of criticism from other scholars -- since good historiography is actually a group effort.
