stemelbow Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 I listened to this found it to be a great discussion on genre's with the Bible. most of it seems and feels obvious to me, but I also thought from a pretty conservative (in terms of faith spectrum within the Church) he has a pretty good view that should be in consideration. Thanks Ben Spackman. Thought I'd offer to those who might be viewing things from a more traditionally Mormon perspective. 1
Robert F. Smith Posted August 10, 2017 Posted August 10, 2017 Thanks, stemelbow. Ben also delivered an excellent lecture at the annual FairMormon Conference on August 5, 2017, "Truth, Scripture, and Interpretation: Some Precursors to Reading Genesis." I don't know when the transcript will be available. He also delivered a seminar paper at the Maxwell Institute the day before that (Aug 4). He noted that there is a host of contradictions throughout Scripture, much of which entails human weakness being accommodated by God -- who speaks to man in his language and limited understanding.. Deut 24:1-4, Matt 19:8 In Alma 18:24-28, for example, Ammon tolerates misconceptions about God for practical purposes. He also pointed out that culture is built in to all revelation and Scripture. We should not expect otherwise. 2
hope_for_things Posted August 11, 2017 Posted August 11, 2017 I really enjoyed that interview and have been following Ben's work for a few years now, he approaches things very nicely and in a non threatening way for more orthodox members. At the same time, he doesn't shy away from mainstream biblical scholarship or try to twist it to some other ends to prove some traditional interpretation or apologetic. I really like his work, and its encouraging to have young scholars like this in the church. 1
