So I'm very fond of George Macdonald, whose reflections on the nature of God's love are among some of the most powerful I've ever read. What makes him stand out to me is that he could go deep, while being beautifully childlike at the same time. One of the most beautiful souls to walk the earth. You could either read his "Unspoken Sermons" or his beautiful novel "Lilith" to see what I'm talking about. It's a shame he isn't talked about more as he was one of the (if not THE) biggest influence on CS Lewis. I think many people avoid him because he was basically a Christian Universalist.

Also, Kevin Christiansen mentioned Terry Pratchett. Even though he was more on the atheistic side of the philosophical spectrum, he could look at so many facets of life, and with humor and beauty talk about why things mean the way they do. He passed away last year, which broke my heart. Read the Discworld novels and you'll fall in love.
