Prayer vs Talking with God

Another new thread brought an idea to my mind that I've wondered about from time to time.

I usually think of "prayer" as talking or communicating with God, basically just a special word we use for comunicating with him.  Whether internally/privately or externally./so other people can hear. Whether two way or one way (with God always listening although we may not always feel/hear his response at all times). The word prayer covers it all, in my understanding, at least usually.

But I also have another idea about what it means or may mean to pray.  Sometimes it seems that the word pray technically means to ask for something from God.  Pray tell me, for example, meaning to please tell me.

Anyways, what do y'all think?

I'm not suggesting that the word prayer doesn't cover just talking to God to express gratitude for something.  As I said I think the word prayer covers ALL types of communications with or to or from God. But maybe that would be the #1 definition while the "asking for something" kind of prayer would be the #2 definition,  or vice versa.

I know I could just look in a dictionary but thought maybe some of you guys and gals could tell me something a little more interesting,  maybe.

Prayer for me has always been just like you said, talking with God, but prayer is different it is reserved for the divine.

i have two types of prayer that I use.

1 basic prayer on the knees, chair and standing.or called pleading prayer.

2 meditation prayer as I am pondering something and feeling the guidance from above.
