This third one was expected to be the last also. The first one showed something like temple teaching. The second was about temple punishment. The third is about the very temple curse. People do not like hear about curse. But the blessing does not come alone, yet has the curse at the other end. It is like a rod with two ends or coin with two sides. The temple is about covenant, and the covenant makes a twofold sign, directed to blessings and curses as well. The nation of old covenant, Israel of old, built temples. The first one fallen under curse, was destroyed and people exiled. The same happened with the second. And the nation was dispersed waiting for the third, the last one. Nowadays, the LDS Church acts like the new Israel and builds temples. The first one fallen under curse, was abandoned and people fled away. The same happened with the second. And the Church trailed away looking for the third, the last one. Mere coincidence? Or does it take three times to build the lasting temple? But I focus on the curse now. It is difficult concept for people today. It is difficult for them to imagine that someone can be struck down because of the temple. Is it easier to imagine that someone was struck down to death thousands years ago because of the temple? (2 Sam.6:7) Or maybe it is easier to imagine how 50070 people could perish because of the temple? (1 Sam. 6:19) And where are the roots for today's temple? Isn't it at these Old Testament stories? If you do not take these stories seriously, do not waste time for reading here more. And even more is required. That's knowledge of early LDS Church history. Especially its youth period, between Kirtland and Nauvoo. The dedication of the Kirtland temple, and great pentecost of those days, set the highest point in the Church history. Everything went right for some time and instantly the Church almost collapsed. Subsequent years show disasters, surrenders, conflicts, abandoning the second temple and Nauvoo. Not until Mormon trail west the fate changes. The history of Israel shows rather possibility to proceed in a victorious way, unless transgression happens. That history shows that the temple dedicated to the living God cannot be ruined or abandoned, unless the curse falls. The unlucky period starting in Kirtland appeals for the question: What is the reason behind? Why such a high blessing changed so quickly to so deep curse? What expected, is a clear commandment transgressed in an obvious way, especially connected to the temple. There was one, as clear as possible. (D&C 97:15) " And inasmuch as my people build a house unto me in the name of the Lord, and do not suffer any unclean thing to come into it, that it be not defiled, my glory shall rest upon it" What is this unclean thing possible? The answer is in Lev. 21:1-11. The priest would be unclean after contact with a corpse. And taking any corpse to the temple would be the worst profanation possible for Israelites. This kind of abomination was quite common in Christian churches. A kind of this abomination had place also in Kirtland and Nauvoo. Let me explain some difference between human and God. Modern people look for very old garbage and consider that... a treasure. They call this archeology. But for God an old corpse is as good as the latest, and still the same unclean. It is not better with mummies... I hope my point is already clear enough. There was time for early LDS Church to meet the temple test mentioned in D&C 97. It came in Chandler's cart. They embraced it. And even took it to the temple (I do not remember the source for this information). What followed are mere consequences listed in D&C 97:26. They managed even to take their curse to Nauvoo. Yet Emma saved them and retained the garbage with her when exodus to Salt Lake begun. This way the period of the temple curse came to end. Yet after many years a piece of papyri surfaced once more... what resulted may be described best like a curse for the Church. So much was spoken and written about the Book of Abraham issue till now that it is hard to comprehend everything. Yet I think it is all in vain, until the temple curse behind is understood.
