Is The Mormon Dress Code Sensible Or Does It Ruin Individuality?

Regarding the rules for single sisters, or sisters whose adult male family members aren't home at the time of a visit by other male members of the Church....the visiting male members cannot come inside unless there is an adult male relative in the house.

Back when my mother and I were investigating this wasn't the case. We had the Elders over all the time with just my mother and me at home. We also had home teachers over when it was just us. The missionaries came over often when I was alone, too, and I was just a teenager.

I guess either some things happened that necessitated this change in policy over the years, or the Church decided to "avoid the apprearance of evil" as it might appear to a casual observer who isn't familiar with what would be going on.

I'm not quite sure when or even if It did change. I am 46 and went on my mission as soon as I turned 21. It's possible things changed between when you had them over and my mission, but I think it is more likely they were not following the rule.

I know we followed it till we started teaching an 80 year old man. At that point we didn't worry at all because what was going to happen between us and an old man. That was till I turned my back to make a phone call only to turn around and find my companion in his arms while he was forcefully planting a kiss on her lips. I could not pull his arms off her.

After that I never broke that rule again no matter what, but I have known others who have thinking, "What's going to happen between me and a middle aged mom?"

This would rule out any visits in my area from November thru April, even October and May would be iffy.

 

At my children's branch many people meet at the building to "home teach" so others are around, and they feel safe.

 

I used to bring my wife, who was not my companion, to visit a young single woman whose husband was off to war.  She felt more comfortable with her there.

 

Creative solutions, and a bit of un-orthodoxy can go a long way towards solving some of these delicate issues.
