Why Byu And The Maxwell Institute Are In Serious, Serious Trouble

This is a very interesting question in itself- in a Mormon context- do we have "lay theologians"? Are we all really "laity"?

Nothing could be more absurd than for professional, unordained Roman Catholic theologians to be referred to as "lay theologians." Many are professors with advanced degrees and are not to be confused with the the laity who might do theology in their spare time.

So, why would we imagine that Mormons have "lay theologians"? Are theologians who have spent the requisite years formally studying and coming to grips with all aspects of theology to be referred to as "lay theologians" simply because they are members of a Church with a so-called "lay priesthood." Does that phrase even have meaning?
