Damien the Leper Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 I had heard this song several times over the last year on the radio and decided to look at the video made for the song. The song addresses the gay teen suicide epidemic of 2010. My question to Mormons is: Does it get better? Is it realistic to transcend preconceived notions and annihilate bigotry?A former friend said that it is the fault of those who committed suicide that they did so. That they shouldn't have been affected by others words. This is a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation. Should those who suffer in silence reject the words whether they be with good intent or malicious that equally do harm?
KevinG Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 (edited) I'm not sure what this song or topic has to do with Mormonism other than your asking the question of Mormons and a Mormon discussion board but...Depression and suicide is not a societal problem - it is a mental illness and cannot be solved with catchy pop songs. In fact undue attention and making celebrities out of those who took their lives can lead to copycat behavior. I don't find pop singers or hollywood actors to be very good influences when it comes to encouraging sanity or healthy living.Teens who do not face pressure from being different because of their sexuality face pressure from being different because of their religion, color, accent, braces, friends, talents, weight... you name it.Your post strikes me as an attempt to blame teen suicide on Mormons (as haters). The reality is homosexuality is a very difficult moral and personal struggle. As with any difficult personal and moral issue it is always helpful to have a supportive and loving family. This does not mean they have to agree with all of their kids choices or enjoy their personal struggles- they just need to be there for them and love them.Anyone who hates their children has problems regardless of sexual mores and beliefs. But more often than not I suspect even those who struggle with sexual identity and their parents love each other.I will teach my children morality from the scriptures and my personal beliefs. I will also love them intensely no matter what choices they make. I will not stay silent when people try to blame suicide, a selfish choice by a desperate or disturbed individual, on a religion, moral stance or society. Edited March 2, 2012 by DaddyG 1
TAO Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 (edited) Valentinus, bullying isn't right, but getting bullied doesn't make it right for you to kill yourself, tbh =/.I got bullied quite a bit, and occasionally had a few somewhat depressive thoughts. But that was due more to the lack of friends rather than the bullying. I questioned the purpose of the world. But here I am, today, still running, and much stronger. Edited March 2, 2012 by TAO
