Lowercase And Uppercase Gods

With these various quotes from LDS teachings, is there any plan to standardize on only one

of them or are they synonymous terms?

"Joseph Smith taught a plurality of gods, and that man by obeying the commandments of

God and keeping the whole law will eventually reach the power and exaltation by which

he also will become a god" (Doctrines of Salvation, volume 1, page 98).

"Mortality is the testing or proving ground for exaltation to find out who among the children

of God are worthy to become Gods themselves, and the Lord has informed us that few

there be that find it" (Doctrines of Salvation, volume 1, page 69).

"... so that undeveloped offspring of celestial parentage is capable, by experience through

ages and aeons, of evolving into a God" (in Clark, Messages of the First Presidency, 5:244 -

Religion 234-235 - Eternal Marriage Student Manual, page 167). This is also repeated in

Messages of the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4:205-206,

referenced in Religion 430-431 - Doctrines of the Gospel Student Manual (chapter 7).

"All good things come from God. Everything that he does is to help his children become like

him–a god. He has said, Behold, this is my work and my glory–to bring to pass the immortality

and eternal life of man" (Gospel Principles, 1997, chapter 1, page 9).

Synonymous. Generally understood to be the same type of God. God typically refers God the Father, the one we worship. "gods" in this context typically refers to those Gods who we don't worship but have achieved the same degree of exaltation as God the Father. I try to always write with a capital "G" to emphasize our doctrine that man can have the same power and authority as God the Father through the Biblical process of Deification.

I'm curious as to why you would ask this question. Do you believe that the issue of capitalization signifies a doctrinal shift?

I think the terms are synonymous in those passages. I was just wondering how others viewed

it.
