altersteve Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 I'm having a discussion with someone on another forum, and I told him about our belief in the three degrees of glory, and he asked me a question that I wasn't expecting: "What exactly do you mean by the word 'glory'?" I think it's a good question and I'm not sure how to answer it very well. I was simply going to link him here, but are there any specific scriptural references I could give him? He's an atheist.Thanks in advance.

When we speak of the telestial/terrestrial/celestial glories, we're essentially defining round about how much light & knowledge (intelligence) those who inherit those kingdoms can have. "For behold, this is my work and my glory, to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man"--as a Celestial being, glory gets added upon your head forever and ever, meaning not only the knowledge you've gained, but the intelligences you help along as well. I think the term "glory" then is the collective light & truth/intelligences you receive. 2

He's an atheist.Thanks in advance.I would explain that glory is a visible/physical manifestation of spiritual righteousness in the form of light (for example, the degrees of glory according to the righteousness of a resurrected person, or the glory attendant to a transfiguration). D&C 93 and 76 and D&C 130:7 go into greater detail about the interelationships between light, truth, intelligence, knowledge and glory.
wenglund Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 As I see it, there are various connotations of the word, not the least of which are: 1) the brightness of spiritual and physical light that one is able to both personally bear and shine forth, and 2) the respect and honor and devotion to which one is due.Thanks, -Wade Englund-
