Olavarria Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 It's impossible to know whether the original Jaredites were Semitic or non-Semitic. So any work with the vestiges of their language(s) in the Book of Mormon is super speculative, at best. It's possible that Jared, Mahonri and their followers were part of the last vestifes of a religious/ethnic minority within Sumerian culture. Who knows? The following is probably a false cognate, but interesting nonetheless. Zerin" For the brother of Jared said unto the mountain Zerin, Remove—and it was removed"(Ether 12:30). zir [BREAK] (373x: ED IIIb, Old Akkadian, Lagash II, Ur III, Old Babylonian) wr. zi; zi-ir; ze2-er "to tear out; to break, destroy; to be troubled; to erase" Akk. ašÄšu; pasÄsu
Astral_Lds Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 We can never know what language the Jaredites used. Our current book of Ether has gone through 3 different translations. Firstly it was translated by king Mosiah. From Ethers original record.2. it is likely that Moroni used Mosiah's translation when writing the book of Ether undating the language of Mosiah's day in that of his own understanding. 3. We have Joseph Smiths translation of Ether. Our current book of Ether is closets to Moroni's language. Which I feel is related to Mayan.
blackstrap Posted December 21, 2011 Posted December 21, 2011 If I were to ask Mt. Everest to move, and it did, would I then rename it,Rolling Stone. I can't follow the logic of naming something after what happened unless it had no name before. I guess that it has something to do with the traditional way of naming places . Please clarify how such naming works.

I see five layers, the original historical sources, Ether’s redaction of those sources into his record, Mosiah’s translation of that record, Moroni’s redaction of that translation for his account and Joseph’s translation of Moroni’s account. I see Moroni speaking a Mixe-Zoquean language per Sorenson's geography. However, the "Egyptian" and "Hebrew" were probably only used for liturgical purposes. Edited December 21, 2011 by Olavarria

It's also possible that the name appears as a result of the 5 transmission layers. It's possible that the mountain wasn't called Zerin but rather that "zerin" was part of what MM said ie Remove. It was quite common in the Bible. Sampson killed 1,000 Philistines with the jawbone of an a$s and the place was called the hill of the jawbone.Isaac dug a well. and the place was called the well of the oath. The examples are myriad.Lehi
