selek1 Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) 0734 MST this morning marked a total lunar eclipse for western North America and most of the Pacific Rim.It was also special in two ways:First, it was a single event that my daughter (on her mission in the Phillipines) and I could share in real-time.I've been missing my baby girl for some time now, so this was something of an early Christmas present for me.Second, for Utahns, it was a "horizontal eclipse" or selenehelion- meaning that both the sun and the eclipsed moon could be seen at the same time. mfbukowski Posted December 10, 2011 Posted December 10, 2011 (edited) This morning I was driving west on the freeway, and noticed a "crescent" moon.Then I thought about it.The morning before the moon was full! How could that be?? Must be clouds or something..... But the clouds were not illuminated.Then it hit me- it had to be an eclipse! It was a long drive and I got to watch it until it reached it's fullest point, and about then the lack of contrast between the darkened disk of the moon and the brightening sky made the eclipse pretty invisible.But it was very cool- you could see the red glow from our atmosphere projected onto the surface of the moon.I bet it was REALLY cool seen from the moon!And I can relate to the part about daughters and missions- mine just came home 3 weeks ago!
