Jesterss Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Ok, so obviously I'm not aware of this. Just want to make that very clear right off. My knowledge about your temples and beliefs is limited. I just know that there are a ton of mormon temples throughout the world and in a previous discussion this idea came to me. Do mormons believe that God resides in these temples? Is there a holy of holies? I'm also not sure if this is appropriate as I realize that the temple discussions can be tedious and highly guarded. So if this topic is ok with the moderators or anyone willing to divulge on it. I would be curious to know.
LeSellers Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 (edited) Do mormons believe that God resides in these temples? Not "permanently". He may come there, and we Believe He does, but it is not His "home".Is there a holy of holies? In some, yes. Not in all. As I recall, there is but one room, among all the possible ones in all of the Temples across the earth, that is designated as the "Holy of Holies". It's not something we discuss often, but it is not off limits.Lehi Edited October 11, 2011 by LeSellers

God resides in the highest Heavens. The temples are where he names his name on the earth. The temple is a house of Prayer. The temples are only mirrors of the enternities. On earth as it is in Heaven.
Jesterss Posted October 11, 2011 Author Posted October 11, 2011 Oh ok, I wasn't sure. Thanks for the clarifications from all. That pretty much wraps up that question. lol @ kolob..

I have felt the spirit of the Lord in very strong and distinct ways in the Temple. It is a very sacred and special experience for me to participate in the ordinances there. thesometimesaint Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 Jesterss:You might call Temples his vacation homes. He is welcome anytime he wants to drop in for a while. We are merely his guests.Yes some Temples do have a Holy of Holies. The Salt Lake City and Saint George Temples are two that I recall off hand that do.
Zakuska Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 You got a better name for the place where God resides?(Really, lol @ any part of someones belief system is crass)She got the joke. 1) since Kolob is a star not a planet.

thesometimesaint Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 I've heard that. But just thought it was the ramblings of a mad man.
Sky Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 All LDS temples have the words ‘The House of the Lord’ on the outside. So yes, they are His houses and He can come to visit when He pleases. Does it happen often? I don’t know. But there are now about 130 temples dotting the earth, and the Lord can’t be in all of them at the same time.
wenglund Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 God resides in our temples of stone in much the same sense that he resides in our temples of clay (our bodies)--i.e. he resides within each by way of his Spirit. Thanks, -Wade Englund-

My knowledge about your temples and beliefs is limited. I just know that there are a ton of mormon temples throughout the world and in a previous discussion this idea came to me. Do mormons believe that God resides in these temples? Is there a holy of holies?Yes, to both questions. From the time that an LDS temple is formally dedicated, until it is desecrated, the Lord is immanent (rather than transcendent) in all of them continually via his Holy Spirit. Some people might speak of this in technical terms as his Shechinah or Divine Presence in his holy house. There is indeed a holy of holies in the Salt Lake Temple. The same situation will apply to the temple which the Jews will build in Jerusalem, which will also include a holy of holies (debir), which can be entered only by the chief High Priest.“Closer is He than breathing, and nearer than hands and feet.” Alfred Lord Tennyson 2

I may be missing an example or two, but I know of only one instance in which Jesus is said to have appeared in a Mormon temple: Joseph Smith said he saw Jesus during the dedication of the Kirtland Temple. Other instances in which revelation is said to have occurred in the "Holy of Holies" of the Mormon temple, such as the landmark 1978 revelation that prohibited racial discrimination in priesthood ordination, were described as manifestations of the Holy Spirit.

It is His temple, dedicated to Him; and provided it is maintained holy, He can visit it personally if and when He chooses to. 2

Cobalt-70 Posted October 11, 2011 Posted October 11, 2011 He can also visit His temples in Person if He wanted to. It is His temple, dedicated to Him; and provided it is maintained holy, He can visit it personally if and when He chooses to.Jesus can visit anywhere he wants. It is not like he would never visit the earth if we didn't build him temples. So when we say that "God dwells" in the temples, we almost always mean the Holy Spirit.

Yet Cobalt says he does dwell there. So, seems like conflicting ideas.

There is undeniably a heavenly presence in the temple; it's completely indescribable. But no, God does not literally live there, although He has come to the temple on at least a few occasions. There is no contradiction.
