KevinG Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 Regarding anti-depressents. I used to be of the school that I could just "gut it out" when I was depressed. My doctor told me that 4 out of 5 people suffer from depression and the fifth is in denial. That made me smile, but it also gave me permission to try some medical help. This doctor was not a pill pusher by any means and he is conservative with prescriptions to this day.Years later I was diagnosed with a heart valve problem that sometimes manifests itself in depression. I was relieve to find out there was a physical cause for my mental state and by eliminating caffiene and decongestants I was able to control it better. I still take a small daily dose of a mild anti-depressant to keep me from crashing.Depression is like any other medical condition. No, we shouldn't be passing out medications like candy, but we shouldn't be too proud to take them just becuase its a broken hormone or saratonin uptake instead of a flu or sprained ankle. 3
Messenger Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 (edited) I understand a little about depression. After my divorce I was depressed. After a year of going nowhere, I did see my doctor and I did take a small amount of medication. I was on it for about a year, then decided that I stop. I probably should have told the doctor that I was going to stop cold turkey, but I was fine. I dont take anti-depressants now. Although people with ADHD can have some mood swings its not at all like depression where its that way for months or longer.I think people that have been lucky enough to never have experienced depression dont know the scope of it. But, I feel that most people dont know very much about ADHD, being a convert in a non-LDS family, or being divorced either. So, I would say that ignorance is bliss! BUT JUST YOU WAIT! LOL Thats the tricky thing about judging something or someone by not actually knowing it. And of course, I'm talking about me, not anybody on this thread. I used to judge people that were divorced. Ya, so you can imagine how I judged myself when I got mine. So, I've learned not to judge what I dont know by personal experience or by spiritual knowlege. But I do think its perfectly fine to talk about it on a forum to try and more fully understand. Edited September 8, 2011 by Messenger 1
