Polygamy in isolated communities would lead to a scarcity of eligible brides, the scarcity could lead to the exploitation of teenage girls. As for young men, .... well need I explain the potential negative impact on young men in small community with no marital prospects.

However, it is the criminalization of polygamy that has forced it into isolated, closed communities.

There are approximately 1100 different societies in the countries around the world. About 850 of those societies allow and practice polygamy. In open societies, there does not seem to be a depleted population of females for young males. And not everyone in those societies decide to enter into a polygamous marriage.

Muslims are allowed to have four wives, but must be able to support and care for all that they marry. There may be problems with the system, but they seem mainly to stem from the men not following the law. In the Muslim countries, many women elect to enter into a polygamous relationship rather than become a mistress. Being a second wife is fine in the eyes of their families and Muslim law, but being a mistress is not.

However, in the United States, polygamy is viewed by many as barbaric, while fathering many children out of wedlock by different women is not only legal, it is seemingly looked upon with tacit approval by a large part of the U.S. population. After reading about polygamy as practiced around the world, while there are problems to be sure with the way it is handled here and there, it does not appear that polygamy causes nearly the problems that are caused by the swelling number of fatherless households in this country as the result of many of our men having all of the benefits of multiple sexual partners with little accountability for parenting or even supporting their offspring.
