mapman Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 I volunteered to write something up about Book of Mormon geography and how it has been viewed by different Mormons. I haven't gotten very much education (yet), but I've read widely on the subject and I fancy that I know something about the subject.

zerinus Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 (edited) Friends:I am embarking on a project to collect short articles on subjects related to Mormon Doctrine. I operate http://www.mormonstudies.com and plan to post these short articles there. The overall goal of the project is to provide those interested in Mormonism with access a short and concise reference on the wide range of topics. There are a few guidelines I would like to put in place for these short articles: * Articles should be between 300-500 words * These articles should be fair and accurate. In other words, they should not be devotional nor polemical. * References and corresponding links to references are highly desirable. * The tone of the articles should be academic but also accessible. All contributors will be asked to provide brief bios and links to their personal blogs/websites.If anyone is interested in helping me edit submitted articles, please contact me. sethpayne@gmail.comThose of you who would like to submit articles please visit this link and input your name, email address and the topic on which you would like to write.https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dDZfWEVEVTUwd1pOMHd1bzU5RGJyMUE6MQ#gid=0Thanks!SethThe best way to organize a project of this kind in my opinion is through a Wiki type site, which can be contributed to and updated by everyone; and as far as I know one already exists. It is an extension of the old Encyclopaedia of Mormonism project. It is something that can be continually added to and improved. Unless you can give a good reason for starting a new project, I think that peoples' efforts would be better spent contributing to or improving existing projects. There are other sites which aim to explain LDS doctrine, including official ones by the Church. So unless you can give a convincing reason why starting a new project along those lines is desirable, reinventing the wheel doesn't seem to be a very good idea. Edited June 29, 2011 by zerinus

I'm of the opinion having multiple sources of information from various points of view is a good thing. I considered the open wiki approach but find it a bit unwieldy and difficult to track the quality of content. As to whether I have provided "good reason" for people to participate in this particular effort or is up to each individual to decide. So far the interest has been solid and I'm pleased with the contributions thus far. I agree that this project is similar to others out there but I don't believe we are "reinventing the wheel", so to speak. SethETA: I should mention that part of the purpose of this project is to have fun researching and writing about Mormonism. Plus, speaking selfishly, it gives me a chance to meet and interact with some great people. Again, all contributions are welcome. Edited June 29, 2011 by sethpayne 1
mfbukowski Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 I'd like to do something on Mormonism and Pragmatism but don't know if that would be appropriate for the site?

mfbukowski Posted July 2, 2011 Posted July 2, 2011 I think it would not only be appropriate but a great addition!Ok- if you think so then I'm in. I'll get to work on it.
sethpayne Posted July 2, 2011 Author Posted July 2, 2011 Considering the articles various folks have expressed interest in writing about I think a more appropriate name for this project would be: Mormon Studies Project.
