Vance Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 There was an interesting article in today's LA Times that condemns the "religious bigotry" that you speak of (this article is specifically about Romney, but speaks to general religious bigotry in American politics)....here's the linkThanks for the link. I had found that on my own and was going to post it. I am glad you beat me to it.It was interesting.
Vance Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 With articles like the one written by Warren Cole Smith, is it any wonder that Evangelicals and Latter-day Saints have a hard time getting along with each other?Smith’s argument in a nutshell seems to be that a person must accept the Nicene Creed in order to be considered for elected office. And a belief in continuing revelation is ‘dangerous.’If the election next year is between Romney and Obama, I wonder who he will vote for? He might just have to sit the election out.For a good read by Joanna Brooks from Religion Dispatches, see Mormons and Romney Presidency "Dangerous" According to Evangelical AuthorThere are only two things that would keep me from voting for an Evangelical.1) If their political positions are not in line with my own, 100% not required.2) They haven't exhibited anti-Mormon tendencies. Sorry, but if they can't accept the concept of freedom of worship then I can't support them. Thanks for the link. I found it on my own this morning and did find it very interesting. Thanks for beating me to it.It is rather obvious that Mr. Smith just doesn't like Mormons. Oh, but he did say this, "I have tons of Mormon friends."Yeah, right.
Vance Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 . . . having a Mormon president would lead more people to Christ's church. Nah, That isn't necessarily a given.
Jaybear Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 So, you stated your opinion and pretended it was a fact. All you had to do was say so.I thought it was patently obvious to all that I was expressing my opinion that most Mormons believe that electing a Mormon US President would advance the cause of Mormonism. Here is one example: BC SPACE: "I agree that it would advance the cause of the Mormon Church".Frankly, I can't think of a rational reason why someone, mormon or non mormon, would not believe that electing a Mormon president would not help to advance the cause of Mormonism. Why you are choosing to make an issue out of this simple statement is truly puzzling to me. Especially since you haven't actually said you harbor a different opinion.
Jaybear Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Nah, That isn't necessarily a given. Not my point. Jaybear: I believe that the Heat will win the playoffs. Vance: Nah, that isn't necessarily a given. Does that help?
Vance Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 I don't think it a coincidence that 95% of Utah republicans voted for Romney in the primary. You mean that surprises you even after what he did for the State with the Olympics? Really?I suspect that 95% of Utah republicans voted for McCain in the Election. Would that surprise you as well?I suspect that 95% of Utah democrats voted for Obama in the Election. Would that surprise you as well?
Jaybear Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Jaybear you seem to have issues with consistency.Whether some Mormons consider Reid a Mormon or not is irrelevant to whether the rest of the world's perception of Reid being a Mormon. I strive for consistency. The problems is that you have a tendency to read things into what I write that were not there. With all your personal attacks. You have yet to justapose two sentences that I have written which are inconsistent. This is a classic example. I agree with your point: Whether some Mormons consider Reid a Mormon or not is irrelevant to whether the rest of the world's perception of Reid being a MormonNothing I said is inconsistent with that sentence. Some Latter-day Saints will indeed see it as a way to advance the "cause".Only some? Not most? Not you? Come on now.
Vance Posted June 2, 2011 Author Posted June 2, 2011 Not my point. Jaybear: I believe that the Heat will win the playoffs. Vance: Nah, that isn't necessarily a given. Does that help?Well, now that that you phrase it as a belief/opinion I don't have a problem with it.
Sleeper Cell Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Frankly, I can't think of a rational reason why someone, mormon or non mormon, would not believe that electing a Mormon president would not help to advance the cause of Mormonism. For starters, if we elect a Mormon president, terrorists might target Mormon missionaries. BTW, did electing Hoover and Nixon help advance the cause of “Quakerism?”
thesometimesaint Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Jaybear:The US has had a couple of Quaker presidents. I didn't see people flocking the become Quakers with the election of Richard Nixon.
Jeff K. Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 I strive for consistency. Only some? Not most? Not you? Come on now.Kid you see personal attacks everywhere my point was that you were inconsistent, and unfortunately you don't see the implications of your own words. Its not about you since I rarely look at the poster so much as respond to the words. I don't give posters much thought unless they are brilliantly right or brilliantly wrong. You are niether. From my view and my comment, you are inconsistent and no, I don't see most Latter-day Saints seeing Romney's election as president to be "advancing the cause". You won't see a slew of baptisms because of it anymore than Catholics saw a slew of baptisms when Kennedy was elected.Others have pointed out the issue with your words (ie placing opinion as fact)
Mola Ram Suda Ram Posted June 2, 2011 Posted June 2, 2011 Nor do you invite them to come to the Church of Jimmer, or the Chuch of Donny and Marie, or the Church of Steve Young. But if you think the PR dept of the LDS Church would not be thrilled if the US elected a Mormon president, then wow, we really do live in different worlds.Depends on the mormon running/ getting elected.
Avatar4321 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Because we invite them to come to the church of Jesus Christ, not the church of Romney or Huntsman.Don't you know thats just all a fabrication. we don't really do that. We are worshiping joseph smith or something like that.
Avatar4321 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Sure there are risks. I didn't say having a mormon president would advance the cause of Mormonism. You seriously want me to explain why Mormons believe that electing a Mormon president would advance the cause of Mormonism?I don't think it a coincidence that 95% of Utah republicans voted for Romney in the primary. I don't think its a coincidence the Romney brought in more money from donors in Utah than from New York. Harry Reid is not the US President. Moreover, a lot of Mormons don't consider Harry Reid to be a "real" Mormon, because he is a democrat.Nor do you invite them to come to the Church of Jimmer, or the Chuch of Donny and Marie, or the Church of Steve Young. But if you think the PR dept of the LDS Church would not be thrilled if the US elected a Mormon president, then wow, we really do live in different worlds. You think it was Romney's faith that caused 95% of the most conservative State to vote for the Most conservative candidate in 08?
MelvinCJohnson Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 And by that we reject "historical Christianity"?And isn't "Most Christians" and "commonly accepted historical facts" the fallacy of "ad populum"?Yes and no. You are stretching.
Vance Posted June 3, 2011 Author Posted June 3, 2011 Yes and no. You are stretching.Your argument is so well crafted that it is almost convincing. Thanks for sharing.
CQUIRK Posted June 5, 2011 Posted June 5, 2011 Joanna Brooks did a interview with Warren Smith, and it makes him look even more like the bigoted pharisee that he is.http://www.religiondispatches.org/archive/politics/4681/mormons_%26_romney_presidency_%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%C5%93dangerous%C3%A2%E2%82%AC%C2%9D_according_to_evangelical_author/
