Women and the Priesthood

Perhaps.

But I wonder if it is the Patriarchal Priesthood that demands gender specificity; as its corollary Mariarchal priesthood demands also.

Does these priesthoods have to do with the right/ability to fatherhood, motherhood?

Precious little is preserved of Joseph Smith's teachings regarding the Patriarchal Priesthood, and what I have learned is mostly from the book, Words of Joseph Smith.

It has been a while, but the gist I get from what Joseph said is that the Patriarchal Priesthood holds the keys of sealing for time and eternity in the patriarchal order.

In other words, it takes a priesthood superior to that of Melchizedek to seal people together in the temple.

My memory could be faulty; I may have it wrong; and there may be more to it.

I believe I taught a little about it once upon a gospel doctrine teacher . . .

The priesthood of Anna, the prophetess?

The order of Eve?

Lots of wonderful women to choose from, all of whom were endowed from on high, many of whom prophesied, foresaw, called down the powers of heaven, and even one who acted as a judge in Israel...

Not one of which required acknowledgement as a "Priest" to do so....

IMO exactly right.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with gender roles since nature has made us different.

I suppose we could all have been androgynous, and then at least we would have no "problem" then with gay marriage.

But we are not androgynous. Do you think maybe that is for a reason?

Like maybe it symbolizes something greater about the nature of God as Eloheim himself/herself?

Like maybe it is important to bring duality into unity? You know, like opposition in all things? Yin yang and all that?

Like maybe bringing the Self into unity with the Other?

Nah. Let's just make everyone the same. Who needs that silly garbage?

I think making people equal wouldn't be so bad . . .

The point we are trying to make is that they are.

They are equally necessary in God's plan.

The priesthood is no more honorable than motherhood, that it isn't. =)

I'm not sure the analogy is apt . . .

Satan is also equally necessary in God's plan.

Actually, I disagree with your analogy...

Yes, he is necessary, but he had a choice in becoming who he became.

Thus why men and women cannot be compared to this example - because they had no choice in becoming what they are. Thus, as God is just, he views men and women not only as equally necessary, but also equally capable of receiving his blessings.

What about priesthood blessings?

I'm not sure that's been fully established. What has been established is that our gender roles are an essential part of our pre-mortal life. Are you sure that wasn't a choice/assignment in the pre-mortal realm to prepare us in areas of study/preparation for our being born into mortality as (the convenient and symbolic) biological males and females? ;) - But that's for another thread...I'm violating my own thread rules :P

Priesthood blessings are for others, that they are. Women can still receive priesthood blessings.

I would disagree - if there had been the capability to choose, there would be no need for polygamy for exaltation, nor would there be any reason that God opposes gay mairrage, I would think. The inability to choose gender is behind much reason - and if it falls, then much of our excuses fall.

Are you sure that wasn't a choice/assignment in the pre-mortal realm to prepare us in areas of study/preparation for our being born into mortality as (the convenient and symbolic) biological males and females? ;)

Again, if it was an assignment, there would be no need of polygamy in the celestial, as all would properly have a single spouse. Thus, it cannot be a choice or assignment, I think. I think it was part of the intelligences before the world was.

I'd love to create another thread if you want to discuss this. Would you like me to? =)

I went ahead and did it.

Evil is necessary to God's plan, not Satan specifically. Note that he will shortly be bound for a thousand years and the plan will keep on going just fine.

Whatever that is supposed to mean.

God is no respecter of persons. We already ARE equal and it has always been so. You can't "make" them equal when God already has. Of course if you are talking about politics.... which actually, it appears you are..... it doesn't belong here.

Well, clearly, some women in the early church had the Priesthood. This changed.

Clearly, Joseph Smith was okay with black men having the Priesthood (Elijah Abel). This also changed.

Joseph Smith recorded a promise which he gave to the Relief Society regarding the priesthood in his instructions to the Relief Society on 28 Apr 1842:

"gave a lecture on the priesthood shewing how the Sisters would come in possession of the privileges & blessings & gifts of the priesthood & that these signs should follow them, such as healing the sick, casting out devils &c. & that they might attain unto these blessings
