Every time a local paster would show the movie "The Godmakers" a few weeks later there would be an upsurge in investigators, which would invariably lead to a few baptisms which would be followed by another showing of "The Godmakers" in yet another church. The joke at the time was that if we could figure out how not to put a dime into Ed Decker's pocket we would send every paster in the region a copy of the movie. By doing so, the joke continued, the Mission home in Denver would have to send us half of their missionaries just to teach all the investigators.

While some leave with a "boy-they-sure-are-weird" feeling from such things, most people are curious how normal, thoughtful, on-the-ball Mormons they know would explain such things. At a minimum --- often, people can sense that there must be "the rest of the story," or at least more than meets the eye than in a cartoon parody.

WalkerW Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I had a friend ask me Church History questions because of South Park. He showed me the episode, I laughed a lot, and then he said, "Ok. I know it's South Park, so they have probably exaggerated. What parts did they exaggerate?"

Mormonism has always thrived in spite of opposition and mockery. Oddly enough, this opposition has actually played an important role in helping to shape the Church. Opposition is part of our psyche. 2nd Nephi 2 (there must be opposition in all things) says it best.
