CQUIRK Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 It seems that Brigham Young is saying that Adam, rather than Elohim, is the Father of our spirits and the father of Jesus Christ. It appears that he is giving roles, that we today attribute to Heavenly Father, to Adam. I think he also believed that all human beings will become Adams and Eves as part of eternal progression. No. As to the quotes and research I did, the answer is way more complex. In fact I think the wiki article on the AGT has one of the best takes on it.
kamenraider Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 Did Brigham Young teach false doctrine about Adam? Spencer W. Kimball said he didn't say that Brigham Young taught false doctrine. Doesn't that show pretty clearly that Spencer W. Kimball didn't know what he was talking about? Does anyone want to defend what Brigham Young taught on Feb. 7, 1877 and Oct. 8, 1854 as being true doctrine? Did he really teach true doctrine which was misquoted and made to seem false? The grasping at straws is really becoming humorous.edit: Just thought I'd mention that of course I actually believe that Brigham Young taught true doctrine regarding Adam, but the LDS church at the present time does not seem to so believe, judging from the statements of some of its leaders like Spencer W. Kimball.

Neither did he say that Brigham Young taught false doctrine. What he did say and what he meant is that the Adam
CQUIRK Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 I wonder... Did Joseph Smith ever specifically teach that God the Father fathered our spirits? I am not aware of him ever doing so. Joseph taught that we were intelligences that God organized, but did he teach that he was the literal father of our spirits?Have you heard about the King Follett Discourse?http://www.fairlds.org/FAIR_Conferences/2004_King_Follett_Discourse_in_the_Light_of_Ancient_Beliefs.html
kamenraider Posted December 21, 2010 Posted December 21, 2010 CQUIRK, could you do me a favor and point out the difference between what Brigham Young really meant to say, and the interpretation placed upon his remarks by apostates and fundamentalists? I'm confused by the very idea, and you seem to have such a clear view of this issue that I'd really appreciate your help, so thank you in advance for your detailed and specific explanation. This link may be of assistance: LINK

This link may be of assistance: LINKFirst off- the clear view is that BY didn't elaborate on Adam God fully enough for everybody to understand what he was trying to teach, so all we can do for now is speculate.Second off- various apologists and others have come to different conclusions and interpretations on what he meant to say. I myself personally believe in the 'Two Adams' theory, since it seems the most rational to me, and a lot of his talks and sermons seem to fit with that view, IMO.

Socratic Spelunker Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 How do you deal with the Adam-God theory? What is the theory?
kamenraider Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 What is the theory? In a nutshell, that Adam = God the Father. This link should give you some idea about what the "theory" or doctrine is based on: LINK
Brenda Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Overall, the gospel is so beautifully logical, and living it has brought me untold blessings, that I just don't worry about things like this. Someday I would like to hear BY explain what he meant, but until then, it just doesn't matter.
TAO Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Hey, kamenraider, have you ever thought that perhaps HF was Adam on a different world?Just saying . Doesn't solve everything, but there is more than 1 ways of interpreting it.

Why he went and took a body and went to redeem a world in the flesh...." I don't think he would've redeemed his world if he had been the one that caused the fall on it.
erichard Posted December 26, 2010 Posted December 26, 2010 In a nutshell, that Adam = God the Father. This link should give you some idea about what the "theory" or doctrine is based on: LINKIs that link to the entire Drew Briney book on Adam-God? I thought this quote (which I had not read for a long time) from the link was pretty clear in differentiating between Adam and Eloheim, and yet still verifying that Adam has gained his exaltation and is over us. Millenial Star 15:801-04 (1853)ADAM, THE FATHER AND GOD OF THE HUMAN FAMILYThe above sentiment appeared in Star No. 48, a little to the surprise of some of itsreaders; and while the sentiment may have appeared blasphemous to the ignorant, it hasno doubt given rise to some serious reflections with the more candid andcomprehensive mind. A few reasonable and scriptural ideas upon this subject may beprofitable at the present time. Then Adam is really God! And why not? If there are Lordsmany and Gods many, as the scriptures inform us, why not our Father Adam be one of them?...As the great Elohim is supreme and Almighty over all His children andkingdoms, so is Adam as great a ruler, or God, in his sphere, over his children, and thekingdom which they possess. The earth and all things upon it were created for Adam, and it was given to him of his Father to have dominion over it....Then shall the nations know that [the Ancient of Days] is their Judge, their Lawgiver, andtheir God, and upon his decree hangs the destiny of the assembled dead.Richard
