Did this General Authority lie in his Conference talk?

Hmm yea I have no idea where he was dug up at. Looks like he lived in Nevada at the time. I wonder how someone crossed paths with him? I know my dad had no idea who he was until just a week or two before the conference and he was the one who organized the conference. He told me because he thought I’d be excited to hear him speak which I was. I was and still am a military aficionado. Had to be someone in Utah though. My dad and bk packer knew each other pretty well and he stopped by the house from time to time when in the valley. Probably someone packer recommended. -

We had a youth conference here. It was a regional thing and one day long with a dance at the end. I dont remember anything about it except we had a really cool speaker. Vietnam vet. All kinds of inspiring war stories even better than Paul Dunn ( lol). Whole uniform except Garments got burned off in a bomb attack, using a vial of consecrated oil to lube weapons during an all night battle on a fire base somewhere in nam..the event was a success I suppose. No worship bands or live music. Several years later he ran for president. Learned he wasn’t even Mormon till 1984. boy what a let down it was to learn it was all lies. Can’t believe Salt lake sent us this dude. Interestingly it was 85/86 within a year give or take of the salamander letter bombings. Turns out none of our leaders had their discernment meters turned on back then. speakers name was Bo Gritz… -

I disagree as well, in fact the best sermon I have ever heard was from a military chaplain. I'll post it below. Its about 30 min, but it is a good one In the normal definition like seminary trained, parochial school, masters degrees in counseling like a lot of churches require? No. Perhaps a few seminary and institute teachers could qualify and definitely the LDS military chaplains, but in general those folks are not bishops or stake presidents except for happenstance. If we believe that God qualifies those he calls and these people have the Melchizedek priesthood with the power to heal and keys and such then sure they should be considered professional clergy on the Mormon side of things. In terms of bible bashing with most regular Christian preachers...virtually every LDS leader would get destroyed to include the members of the Q15. The quotes I posted all stated " no paid clergy." nothing mentioned about professional or professionally trained. -

So now we r talking about other church’s leaders? LDS have been using the word “ministry” so much lately could have sworn you were talking about Mormons since those leaders paychecks are what is being discussed. my bad In that case I agree that Mormons have long poo poo’d other church leaders who get paid .. to include mega churches. Funny thing is the lds conference center sure looks like a mega church and now we are starting to adopt their practices little by little. We have crucifixes, worship bands at FSY and now sleeveless garments.? What other things is the lds church gonna adopt that we have historically criticized other church’s for? Paying Sunday school teachers? that said I kind wish I would have had some kind of FSY as a youth with worship bands. Looks like it is probably fun for the kids. Back in my day would have been of the devil 😈 -

Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t. I’m sure you don’t care along with many other folks. After CEO of ensign peak admitted one of the purposes of hiding money in shell companies was to conceal the church’s wealth so members would continue to pay tithing,I’m fresh out of any kind of support for these guys when it comes to obfuscation of the uses of church funds. the church should be transparent and provide a full accounting of the funds down to the cent. Instead every year at gen conf the church cfo ( or whatever he is called) gets up and says yep we checked our books and everything is up to snuff according to GAAP. It might be now, but for many years that was a straight up lie. Falsifying government financial disclosures are not found anywhere in the list of GAAP. also anyone drawing a paycheck from the church for being ga shouldn’t be up at the pulpit saying “we” don’t get compensated financially. “ you don’t get compensated”would be more accurate and truthful. -
Not judgmental, just an observation. I’m don’t wear em at all. The workout clothes deal has been a TBM workaround for several years.

Lol he has not devoted his entire career to serving God and his people. Do you even look these people up before making assumptions about them? He is still "working" as the CEO of Whiting right now while serving as a Seventy. His entire career was not devoted to the church. Although he did serve as a mission president two times while he was CEO of whiting, does anyone really believe he would be taking any kind of cut in compensation from a mormon owned firm when he can have a conference call once a week just to stay abreast of things? While he is the CEO of said corp? The board of directors would have to approve his absence and Im betting he didnt realize one cent of a cut in pay for being absent. if it was exxon mobil sure...whiting...heck no. This guy just so happens to have a career in a mormon owned company that allows him to be paid and hang out in church meetings all week (like that is a good time, but it takes a special kind of Masochist to tolerate that garbage and actually say yes to more of it). The Modest stipend likely doesnt even cover their vacations. Even if he didnt have a job at all... he def wouldnt need the money. https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/learn/steven-d-shumway?lang=eng "Elder Shumway received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering from Brigham Young University in 1996. He worked for Exxon Chemical Company in Houston Texas from 1996 to 1998. Since 1998 he has been president and CEO of Whiting Brothers Investment Companies." https://www.whitingbrothersinvestments.com/current-leadership "Steven D. Shumway is president and CEO of Whiting Brothers investment Co. and a managing partner of its affiliated companies. Steven received a bachelors degree in chemical engineering from Brigham Young University and began his professional career working for Exxon Chemical Company at an olefins plant in Houston Texas. Steven and his wife Heidi returned to Arizona to work with Whiting Brothers in 1998. They are active in their community and church. Steven's best hours are spent with his wife and four children working together and enjoying outdoor activities in the beautiful White Mountains of Arizona. " This guy definitely needs a "Modest stipend." -
Do like a lot of TBM women here in Gilbert AZ and likely Utah do... Wear workout clothes all day and be comfortable....and keep your recommend. Its what all the cool kids do. Of course that would involve working out on a rare occasion and staying in the workout getup for the rest of the day. We would not want to lie to our Bishop about wearing the temple garment day and night throughout your life.

Random post on FB came through today. This guy is part of a FB page called “Christian’s vs lds vs atheists.” Check out the last sentence of the post title of post is : differences between Christianity and the church of Jesus Christ … im cutting down the text of the post as it is a bit long… “so called Christian never tells you their Religious beliefs , ever , we constantly hear negative propaganda mud slinging at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, …The just aren’t UNIFIED, like The LDS, I’ve even heard Many say they don’t like organized religion, ? Do you think God‘s church is a chaos church? It’s not, it’s very well organized with prophets Apostles Bishops all non payed” APOSTLES AND BISHOPS ALL NON PAID (payed) Wonder where he got that idea. -
Yea that’s plausible.. I’m assuming they are all Mormons tho right? Or at least mostly?

Mission presidents get reimbursed for living expenses, BYU tuition and missions paid for kids, funds to fly kids out to see them, funds for birthday and christmas presents, dance / violin etc lessons for the kids. Lots of stuff. I dont think they are paid a salary though. Also they are instructed to not tell their tax preparers any details about their financial agreement with the church....that one is interesting. Maybe a nothing burger Source is 2006 mission presidents handbook pp80 if you can find one. Scribd has it if you have an account. -

It wouldnt matter if my commander had been in Vietnam or Desert storm.. he still wasnt involved in the fight we were in and was safely ensconced behind the wire, sandbags and bunkers and did not participate in any combat. He wasnt part of the we. We were a unit with divisible assets who would be attached to other organizations for missions. Our commander didnt even plan missions, he was working part time for a higher guy and part time being our commander. Our missions were strictly Company size (~120 troops) down to platoon size (~30-60 troop) which is what I was leading at the time. He didnt come under fire, he didnt lead missions, he didnt engage in combat, we wasnt wounded. He did not participate in the combat missions "WE" were on. My own company suffered 48% casualties and the fact his existence somewhere at HQ where no one could find him made him definitely not part of the "WE." Granted his job wasnt to be out with us, but to take credit for what "we" did as if he was a participating team member is irritating. My platoon was routinely parted out to go augment other missions and I wasnt with some of the squads who went out. Many times they came back with some crazy stories. In one engagement they killed ~35 AQI. They kicked butt and were my troops but I wasnt on the mission with them and there is no way I would have told them ... "we kicked butt tonite." Best idea is for these guys to quit saying we have no paid clergy. It isnt true and it rarely adds anything of value to the talk or conversation unless they want to virtue signal which is probably a majority of the motivation IMHO.
