Any Good Books on the Kirtland Safety Society

Anyone know of some good books about the Kirtland Safety Society? Unfortunately most easy to find resources online use the KSS to disprove the prophetic mission of JS. I'm more interested in a source that describes the context, operations, etc of the KSS. It looks like the JS Papers project has some good material. Anyone know of other good resources? Thanks in advance!

I don't think there are any books about the Kirtland Safety Society specifically, but there are some nearly book-length articles—the most recent being Jeffrey N. Walker, "The Kirtland Safety Society and the Fraud of Grandison Newell," BYU Studies Quarterly 54, no. 3 (2015): 33–148.

Other recent treatments can be found in Mark L. Staker, Hearken, O Ye People (Salt Lake City: Greg Kofford Books, 2009), 463–543, and Mark L. Staker, “Raising Money in Righteousness: Oliver Cowdery as Banker,” in Days Never to Be Forgotten: Oliver Cowdery, ed. Alexander L. Baugh (Provo, Utah: Religious Studies Center, Brigham Young University, 2009), 143–253. See also, Richard Lyman Bushman, Joseph Smith: Rough Stone Rolling (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2005), 329–332.

Older articles include:

  • Dale W. Adams, “Chartering the Kirtland Bank,” BYU Studies 23, no. 4 (1983): 467.
  • Marvin S. Hill, C. Keith Rooker, and Larry T. Wimmer, “The Kirtland Economy Revisited: A Market Critique of Sectarian Economics,” BYU Studies 17, no. 4 (1977): 391–475.
  • Scott H. Partridge, “The Failure of the Kirtland Safety Society,” BYU Studies 12, no. 4 (1972): 437–54.
  • D. Paul Sampson and Larry T. Wimmer, “The Kirtland Safety Society: The Stock Ledger Book and the Bank Failure,” BYU Studies 12, no. 4 (1972): 427–36.

Thanks for the references, Nevo! I've reviewed some of the older papers but will check out the other references you listed.

i think it's an interesting part of our history and a fascinating look into the nation's economy at the time.
