Started A Response To Dr. Coe'S Ms Interview

It seems like the Mormon Stories interview of Dr. Coe has some significant exposure, (from his Facebook page, "Over 10,000 downloads in only 2 weeks for the Dr. Michael Coe podcast."). I love many of the MS interviews as I have stated on the other thread about this topic, but this one was pretty sad. There were so many incorrect statements that it made me cringe and I don't know much about this subject. Dr. Coe seems like a very nice guy, but I was surprised that John wasn't more aware of how out dated Dr. Coe's information was. I thought JD knew more. Anyway, because it was so outdated, and is getting so much attention I really would like to see a good point by point defense of what was stated in the interview. I know I've heard a lot of things that are more updated on these issues, but don't know the specifics or where to find them. For that reason I thought I would do my part and make a list of them for others to provide quick answers to with some documentation on where the answers come from for legitimacy and for further reading if people are interested. PS: I don't think Dr. Coe is anything but sincere and kind, just not up to date on the specifics here. No ill intent on my part towards him :-)

Besides FAIR and FARMS, and Brant's commentaries, there are relevant materials here. Interesting on horses and metals, in particular.

One of the most striking things about the interview to me is that they never actually quote the Book of Mormon. The only two specific apologetic texts that I remember being mentioned are One Fold and One Shepherd by Ferguson, and a fifties attempt at reading Stele 5 as being related to Lehi's vision. The most recent books that got mentioned were Palmer's and Southerton's.

For all the pride in dealing with "hard questions" and "tough issues," the lack of serious effort permeated the listening experience for me.

Dehlin articulated the sponge theory of Book of Mormon composition in a way that would have made Brodie beam with pride. Just sad, I think. If I get some time, I'll take a look at the Spread sheet. Thanks.
