I understand it's Mormon doctrine that we all had a pre-mortal existence, but were we actually in heaven (the third heaven, Kolob, or wherever it is that God is)?

Where in Mormon scripture does it say we were?

(I've looked, and I can't find anything on this.)

Good question. I don't think we have any revelation on that. I've always just called it "heaven," though. Whatever that means I'm not really sure.

You are correct that it is an LDS belief that we lived a pre-mortal existence with God(D&C 93:29, D&C 138:55-56, Abraham 3:22-23 PofGP are examples) . I believe the assumption is made that if God's home is what we call "heaven" then that's where we were. LDS call 'heaven' the Celestial Kingdom and it's not Kolob. Kolob is a star near heaven, but NOT heaven(Abraham 3:9--PofGP). People seem to make that mistake quite often.

There are a lot of things that we don't know; and usually asking questions about what we don't know or has not been revealed is not a profitable exercise.
