2011 Sunstone Symposium (Utah) Preliminary Program

I'll probably only be able to attend Saturday.

A very interesting program, like a blast from the past.

Last time I was in Ogden for a symposium, the featured speaker was Mark Hoffman, and then RLDS Church Historian Richard Howard sat next to me muttering that Hoffman's description of the RLDS purchase of one of his documents was . . . [expletive deleted] and that he was a liar. He apologized to a lady next to him, who replied that the expletive was one of her favorite phrases. This program also has some noteworthy papers and panels, although one panel to be presented by Robert Anderson and William Morain makes the thoroughgoing and unsupported assertion that

With no historical, archeological, or genetic evidence supporting either the Book of Mormon or the Book of Abraham, the most prominent naturalistic theory of their creation is that they came from Smith’s own mind. Over a decade ago, each of us independently published a comprehensive psychobiographic study of Smith, using contemporary models of behavioral science to provide alternative explanations to the mystical narrative of the Mormon tradition. In this session, we will update our studies to reinforce and further clarify our understanding of Smith’s psychological profile as expressed in his writings and behavior.
