James White on Psalm 82

A while ago James White responded to a bit of Michael Heiser's discussion concerning Psalm 82 as a text about deities rather than humans (see here for Heiser's recent ETS paper on Psalm 82). White disagrees with Heiser and explains why in a bit of detail. I've been meaning to respond to White's post for some time, and I decided last week to take care of it. I've posted a wider discussion of White's interactions with Heiser on my blog (here) with a link to the response I composed and placed online here. I'm interested in comments, critiques, and questions.

Nicely handled.

Good stuff.

I went the rounds with James White years ago on this very issues, and as far as I can tell, he didn't understand a thing I said, and is incapable of understanding the issues at hand.

He was also congenitally unwilling to engage critical biblical scholarship.

We'll see if he decides to involve himself in this discussion or not. I'd be surprised if he did.

I am glad to see this being discussed, Heiser's papers on this topic of of great interest to me. I have tried to discuss the ideas about early Israel's Divine Counsel with other evangelicals-- and they usually think I am nuts.

Same with when I tried to discuss it on a Catholic forum. :P

Maklelan, or anyone else who's willing to respond.

Does James White actually speak or read Hebrew? Understand it? Or even understand Ancient Hebrew?

What I appreciate about your papers, Maklelan,is your use of sources - in Hebrew. It adds credit to your argument! From reading and watching Mr. White I get the sense his only talent is an ability to Bible-Thump and Mormon-Bash. He's entertaining but not very productive. I question why someone would debate him at all?

Also, pardon my ignorance but would you please define Vorlage?

In response to your response, I enjoyed it and learned a lot from it. I think I need to start collecting the work you and others do. They really do bring Gospel Doctrine and Elders Quorum to a whole new level. If anything they make me sound much smarter than I really am.

James has said that he has taught Hebrew before, but I have no idea what his capacities are. My impression is that if he knows it well, he certainly doesn't investigate it in his exegesis. He asked what about Hebrew must lead us to believe ????? and ??? indicate a sharp and unexpected contrast, and it only takes a quick look in a lexicon to find out that that's what that construction does.

You mean impling something like God said ???

as opposed to the Gods agreed among themselves ????? ( or Indeed we agree ) ??
