While I don't pretend to know the the history of this "Watson Letter" thingy, one can't deny the humor and calamity generated by reading the recent soap opera of related posts!! Come on, get a sense of humor and lighten up. Go to a football game or two and have some fun, get some passion!!!!

OTOH, when I served in the army, in 2004 I watched Maccabi Tel-Aviv play for the world cup in basketball. We won as a result of an incredible against-all-odds long pass. My friend and I kicked over the table we had our feet on.

There is plenty I'm passionate about, sports just aren't among them, so spare me the red-blooded all-American disdain.

I don't think that my implication that young Israelis aren't the passionless, unathletic, wimpy nothings that you seemed to imply Volgadon to be -- and that you've several times suggested that I am -- is any any way insulting to young Israelis.

Israel, you may or may not recall, is a small and very hard-working country in a very tough neighborhood. It's under constant threat from the inside and from the outside, and it requires universal military service of its youth.

It's not clear what your game is, except that it involves a lot of sneering and personal hostility, isn't even remotely entertaining, and seems to have no substantive point.

Ok Volgadon, let me give it my last response. Don't know much about Patai or his influence. But what specific LDS piece of scholarship does he cite on BOM historicity ( my original inquiry) that he found convincing?

I don't question that LDS scholars find their own works in this are convincing. And on technical merit it may warrant such accolades, I really don't know.

But it would be like Coach and Bro. Reid, in the locker room of the Eagles, or in front of the Eagles owners or team members claiming: "I have a well respected playbook, put together with the greatest minds available, with the greatest players and dedication. I challenge anyone to look at my play book and find any faults".

Internally it all sounds great and beyond criticism. But until the rest of the league, sports scholars, and shear demonstration on the professional field is consumated, it means nothing nor has convinced his profession or professional peers. But give Bro Reid credit for submitting his scholarship for publication and review to the professional community every week!

One doesn' commission such things for a serious work if one considers them bunk.

So in other words, a distinguished Jewish, Israeli scholar found the ancient seafaring traditions in the BoM convincing enough to have an LDS scholar write an essay on them, which was then included in a book.
