Part of it is activated just by choosing to come to earth, IE all who come here to earth will be resurrected. Other parts of the Saviors atonement are activated through ordinances such as baptism and the partaking of the sacrament. Obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel and also temple ordinances also activate blessings through the atonement. Repentance and the sacrament keep the atonement alive in our life's journey.

Why doesn't God draw everyone near?

Because He loves some of His creation and He hates some of His creation and His creation has no ability to influence His emotions one way or the other. We are subject to all His whims and fancies. We are saved according to His pleasure or we will suffer for the eternities in indescribable pain and suffering for His pleasure. But we must all remember that He is a loving God for He is Love.

Who says He hasn't?

Biblical history is replete with examples of individuals and Israel who/that had knowledge of God's doctrine yet chose to rebel.

I seriously want to know, Hoops, why doesn't God draw everyone near?

Love to discuss it with you.

Don't you think He has provided enough for anyone to know Him? On some level at least?

And there is still this question to be answered. How can God be ultimately Just and ultimately Merciful at the same time? Please understand, orignal sin plays a big part in this.

So some of us are going to be damned to Hell because of what Adam did...interesting.

So, keeping the commandments is worthless when it comes to our salvation, but not keeping the commandments doesn't help in our salvation, but we are told to believe in Christ and accept God, yet we can do nothing to believe in Christ and accept God on our own, yet we are constantly being told by Evangelicals that we have to do so. It's one thing for God to ask us to do the impossible and it's another thing when an Evangelical asks me to do the impossible.

The standard reply from those who can only be saved by works - Sunday draws nigh, make sure you got those checks ready.

We are Saved by Charis through "Pistis" no "checks", a reply to one who finger points a Doctrinal misapplication to Official LDS DOCTRINE, Teaching, Thought, Practice, Walk.

Sorry.

Margaret Barker has some fine papers that helps us peek into what the ancient Israelites and the early Christians thought about the Atonement:

ATONEMENT: THE RITE OF HEALING

I should like to quote here from an article by Mary Douglas published earlier this year in

Jewish Studies Quarterly:

â??Terms derived from cleansing, washing and purging have imported into biblical scholarship

distractions which have occluded Leviticusâ?? own very specific and clear description of

atonement. According to the illustrative cases from Leviticus, to atone means to cover or

recover, cover again, to repair a hole, cure a sickness, mend a rift, make good a torn or

broken covering. As a noun, what is translated atonement, expiation or purgation means

integument made good; conversely, the examples in the book indicate that defilement means

integument torn. Atonement does not mean covering a sin so as to hide it from the sight of

God; it means making good an outer layer which has rotted or been piercedâ??. 14

ENVIRONMENT THEOLOGY

Covenant* and The Covenant of Peace**. Everything - the visible natural world, human society

and the invisible world of the angels - was part of one system created by God. The bonds held

everything together and joined the visible world to God at its centre. Any action which broke the

bonds was called â??sinâ??, and so human conduct could and did destroy the system. Sin could be

deliberate or through ignorance; the effect was the same. Thus one of the key roles of the priests

and the angels was to teach about right conduct. Breaking away from God was not seen as

liberation but as deprivation, losing touch with the source of life and renewal. The mystics

described the holy of holies as â??the mystery of existenceâ?? and â??the mystery of becomingâ??. When the

bonds of the covenant had been broken, the whole system collapsed; because of human sin, the stars

fell from the sky, the sun lost its light - the familiar pictures of the apocalypse.

*â??Eternalâ?? means the timeless but constant presence of God. The Eternal Covenant joins all things

to this timeless state.

**â??Peaceâ?? is the usual translation of the Hebrew word shalom which means wholeness, integrity,

everything as God intended it to be. The Covenant of Peace describes this state.

The eternal covenant was repaired by â??atonementâ??, when the temple/Creation was purified from the

effects of sin [described as pollution], and recreated. Atonement involved repentance and self

sacrifice to renew and restore everything that had been damaged - the Creation, and the personâ??s

relationship with God.

I will make mention of prayer as it seems to be one of the most neglected activities of our present age. Salvation and forgiveness are not automatic. There is a real personal Father who needs to be supplicated and asked for forgiveness of sins. Also if we will open ourselves up to receive direction from His spirit He will guide us and bring us nearer to Him in doctrine, in obedience, in service, in love for others.

"Have ye enquired of the Lord?" Try it, you may be afraid of the scoffs of those who make decisions based upon quotes from documents, but when you receive an answer you won't really care.

2 Ne 32:8 And now, my beloved brethren, I perceive that ye ponder still in your hearts; and it grieveth me that I must speak concerning this thing, For if ye would hearken unto the Spirit which teacheth a man to pray ye would know that ye must pray; for the evil spirit teacheth not a man to pray, but teacheth him that he must not pray.

DC 6:14 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, blessed art thou for what thou hast done; for thou hast inquired of me, and behold, as often as thou hast inquired thou hast received instruction of my Spirit. If it had not been so, thou wouldst not have come to the place where thou art at this time.

Ether 1:43 And there will I bless thee and thy seed, and raise up unto me of thy seed, and of the seed of thy brother, and they who shall go with thee, a great nation. And there shall be none greater than the nation which I will raise up unto me of thy seed, upon all the face of the earth. And thus I will do unto thee because this long time ye have cried unto me.

Alma 26:22 Yea, he that repenteth and exerciseth faith, and bringeth forth good works, and prayeth continually without ceasing-unto such it is given to know the mysteries of God; yea, unto such it shall be given to reveal things which never have been revealed; yea, and it shall be given unto such to bring thousands of souls to repentance, even as it has been given unto us to bring these our brethren to repentance.

For my part, I reject the premise of the question. Grace is not accessed. It is given.

Is it given unconditionally?
