Understanding Views On Sexuality

I have come to realize that I do not hold a “mainstream” view of sexuality. While I do not expect my view of sexuality to substantially change I would like to understand why people hold the view they do. I believe people can make well-reasoned arguments and arrive at conclusions opposed to my own, and I can respect their arguments while disagreeing with their conclusions. In this area I have not seen many well-reasoned arguments and I would like to understand the thought process behind their conclusions.

The specific area I have trouble understanding is the belief that our sexuality is innately inborn. This appears to be the “mainstream” view or at least it is the most commonly expressed view. If you hold this view I would like to understand why.

I believe very strongly that this is not the case, but that our sexuality is a learned response to our culture, physiology, experiences, and choices. I am willing to share my arguments if it helps in the discussion, but really I am seeking to understand a point of view which seems very puzzling to me.

Please refrain from making this a thread about sex. The development of attractions can be discussed separately from the attractions themselves and I do not want this thread to veer off in a direction that results in its closure.
