I saw this thesis by Kerry muhlestein but haven't been able to findi it.The Use of the Palm of the Hand in the Rituals of the Tabernacle and Temple of Solomon. Thesis, Brigham Young University, 1997.Does anyone know where I could find it. Also any recomendations for books that go over ancient gestures within an ancient near eastern context or books that will help me to understand the temple more fully from an ancient near eastern context.

MormonMason Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 "May God do so to me and more also if..." is a formulaic expression of a penalty if the standards and provisions of the covenant or imprecation are not met. It is believed to have been executed with a hand gesture against the body while saying the quoted words. It is a phrase that makes reference to the mutilated remains of a sacrificed animal. Unfortunately, I no longer recall the title of the paper that discussed this. Perhaps someone else here might recall the name of the paper and the author.

I understand of Matthew Brown's book The Gate of Heaven is also very good on this sort of thing. You might also check out some of Jeffrey M. Bradshaw's stuff.The most recent issue of Studies in the Bible and Antiquity has an article (co-authored by Bradshaw) that may be of interest: "The Investiture Panel at Mari and Rituals of Divine Kingship in the Ancient Near East." I also recommend Nicolas Wyatt's article "Degrees of Divinity: Some Mythical and Ritual Aspects of West Semitic Kingship."
maklelan Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 John Lundquist's temple typology book is pretty good. There's a condensed version here, and there is another version with illustrations in Don Parry's book Temples of the Ancient World (which itself has lots of good stuff). Bill Hamblin and Dave Seely also wrote a popular book on Solomon's temple. As far as non-LDS stuff, Menahem Haran's book Temple and Temple Service in Ancient Israel is quite good. You've also got Ziony Zevit's The Religions of Ancient Israel: A Synthesis of Parallactic Approaches, which has a ton on temples. That should at least get you started.
