Beth-Shemesh may have been the first line of resistance against the Philistines, the seafaring people who began to settle there.

FWIW, it has been suggested (Nibley and others) that the Philistines were Greek, and the Mulekites may have been able to enlist them to take them to the New World. It is interesting that the name Timothy is found in the BOM, after the Nephites encountered the Zoramites.
