Leonids Meteor Shower Prophecy

I just came across this Wikipedia article. I never knew about this before:

http://en.wikipedia....Shower_Prophecy

Does anyone have any further information on this? What do most LDS scholars believe about whether or not Joseph actually made this prophecy?

Thank you.

I am not a scholar, but I do not put much stock in Dibble's recollection of this prophecy. Joseph's own handwritten journal entry, recorded at the time, does not support Dibble's account—not in my reading at least. Joseph seemed as surprised as anyone to see the meteor shower. He described it as "a litteral fullfillment of the word of God as recorded in the holy scriptures and a sure sign that the coming of Christ is clost at hand." Surely, if Joseph himself had foretold the meteor shower as Dibble claimed (""Forty days shall not pass, and the stars shall fall from heaven"), he would have noted its successful fulfillment—and we would expect others inside and outside the Church to have remarked on it as well. Such a thing could not have gone unnoticed. Yet we hear not a word about this prophecy until the 85-year-old Dibble recounts it in the Juvenile Instructor in 1892.
