Ariarates Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 In my language, we use the term "sect" but it has an equally negative connotation as "cult" in English. Many authors over here have settled on the descriptive "new religious movement" but as long as the definition remains the same, I don't see the point.Interestingly, most comments in this thread focus on terminology. Does that mean that most people agree with my assessment - that our church can be called a cult (or whatever non-pejorative word is preferred) in the theological, sociological and psychological senses as defined in the OP?
altersteve Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Here's CARM's definition of "cult":http://C***.org/cults-outline-analysisStuff like this makes me very, very sad. Unbelievable.
stevedallas Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I do not believe LDS is a cult. Actually, maybe it is, under the true definition, but nowdays, "cult" has a really bad meaning. LDS does not fit into the bad meaning. I would likely be LDS if not for the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith. I love the teachings and truly enjoy listening to GC
